Sortment vs Pinpoint
Pinpoint was messaging infrastructure. Sortment is lifecycle strategy that executes itself.

Sortment
Sortment is an AI-native lifecycle marketing platform that identifies growth opportunities your team didn't know to look for, then executes them with campaigns and journeys.
Choose Sortment when you're evaluating against a specific outcome, retention, activation, or conversion, and want to see results in 30 days.

Pinpoint
AWS-native multichannel messaging service built for engineering teams. Pinpoint handled email, SMS, push, and voice delivery, but it was infrastructure, not a lifecycle marketing platform.
Segmentation, content creation, journey design, and analytics all needed separate tooling or custom dev work on top of it. AWS also ends support on October 30, 2026.

What Pinpoint never gave you, and what's gone after October 30
Amazon Pinpoint was a messaging API. Marketers who used it stitched together their own stack: a separate tool for HTML templates, another for journeys, something else for cohort analytics. Engineering was in the loop for anything beyond the simplest segments.
That's all going away on October 30, 2026. Console access, campaign management, journey builder, analytics, all of it ends. The SMS, voice, and push APIs are migrating to AWS End User Messaging, but the marketing layer your team actually used won't come with them.
The question is whether you rebuild the same patchwork with a different tool, or switch to something where strategy, content, and execution are already in one place.

Building audience logic...
From engineering dependency to self-serve with AI
Building a segment in Pinpoint meant knowing your AWS data model, writing import logic, and in most cases looping in an engineer. Changing a segment meant starting over.
Sortment connects directly to your data warehouse, Snowflake, BigQuery, or Redshift, without copying data or routing it through middleware. Marketers describe what they want in plain language. The platform turns that into a query, builds the audience, and keeps it current. No ticket required.
One nonprofit team we work with came from exactly this setup. They were building HTML templates in a third-party design tool, uploading them to Pinpoint manually, and waiting on engineers for every audience change, with no dedicated data team on staff.
Moving to Sortment meant going from campaign idea to campaign live inside a single platform.
What Pinpoint analytics couldn't tell you
Pinpoint tracked delivery: sent, delivered, opened, clicked. That's where it stopped. It couldn't tell you why a cohort stopped converting, which lifecycle stage was leaking users, or whether a campaign was actually driving retention.
Sortment's analytics layer reads directly from your warehouse. Funnel analysis, cohort tracking, journey performance, and revenue attribution are all built in.
The platform runs background analysis on a schedule and flags shifts before they show up in a review. Say activation rates start dropping in a segment that looked fine last week.
Sortment surfaces it and recommends what to run next. That's a different category of tool than what Pinpoint was.

Migration before the deadline
With October 30 set, migration timelines are short. The risk of committing to a platform before you've tested it against your own data is real.
Sortment's entry model is a 30-day proof of concept tied to one outcome you pick: retention, activation, or conversion. You run it on live data. If the metric moves, you have the evidence to commit. If it doesn't, you haven't signed a 12-month contract to find out.
Most Pinpoint migrations to Sortment go one of two ways. Some teams connect Sortment for strategy and audience work while keeping delivery on their existing ESP, which means no disruption to live campaigns during the transition.
Others do a full replacement: Sortment handles email, push, SMS, WhatsApp, in-app, and RCS natively, so there's one platform and one contract when it's done.
Choosing the right platform
When to choose Sortment vs Pinpoint
Sortment helps you find and launch growth opportunities. Pinpoint helps you send messages to customers.

Choose Sortment if:
You're moving off Pinpoint before October 30 and need strategy, content, and execution in one place
Your lifecycle marketer is blocked on engineering for audience changes or campaign setup
You need a template builder that's part of the platform, not a workaround involving a separate design tool
You want cohort, funnel, and journey analytics without standing up a separate BI stack
You want AI that surfaces what campaigns to run, not just delivers the ones already in the queue

Choose Pinpoint if:
Your primary need is transactional: OTPs, delivery alerts, system notifications.
You have an engineering team managing your messaging layer
You don't need campaign automation or content creation, the API migration path may be enough
